Based on NHS & NICE guidance
Last reviewed: October 2026 · Free to use · No data collected

Most gallbladder removals (cholecystectomies) in the UK are done laparoscopically (keyhole), as day surgery or with one night in hospital. Recovery is usually quicker than people expect, though some mild digestive changes can continue for a few weeks.

Common questions
Why does my shoulder hurt after gallbladder surgery?
During keyhole surgery, gas (carbon dioxide) is used to inflate the abdomen so the surgeon can see clearly, and some of this gas can irritate the diaphragm, which shares nerve pathways with the shoulder. This 'referred pain' is harmless and usually settles within a few days with walking and simple pain relief.
Do I need to change my diet permanently after gallbladder removal?
Most people can return to a normal diet within a few weeks. In the meantime, eating smaller, lower-fat meals can help as your digestive system adjusts to working without a gallbladder. A minority of people notice ongoing sensitivity to very fatty or spicy food, but this is not universal.
When can I drive after gallbladder removal?
Most NHS guidance suggests waiting until you can wear a seatbelt comfortably and perform an emergency stop without hesitation or pain — often around a week after keyhole surgery, longer after open surgery. Check with your motor insurer too.
